A first-timer’s plan

Two Days in Perissa

One of Santorini’s longest black-sand beaches, the ancient ruins on the rock above it, and the island’s famous caldera villages all within easy reach. Here’s how to spend two unhurried days from a Perissa base — one on the beach, one out around the island.

Getting around: the beach strip is flat and walkable · KTEL buses run via Fira · all sights · getting here & around

Day 1

The beach & Ancient Thera

Black sand, beach bars and the ruins on the rock above — the whole day within walking distance.

Morning
Ease in on Perissa Beach — one of Santorini’s longest stretches of black volcanic sand, backed by the great rock of Mesa Vouno. Grab a lounger, swim, and try the watersports before the sun climbs.
Late morning
For history, hike the switchback path from the south end of the beach up Mesa Vouno to Ancient Thera, the Greco-Roman hilltop city with wide views over both Perissa and Kamari. Go early, and bring water and proper shoes — or save it for a cooler hour and drive up.
Lunch
Back down at the beach, settle into a seafront taverna for fresh fish, Santorini fava, tomatokeftedes and a glass of Assyrtiko. See what to eat for the island’s signature dishes.
Afternoon
Walk south along the sand into Perivolos, the quieter, more upmarket continuation of the beach, lined with beach clubs and loungers — a good place to while away the heat.
Sunset
Claim a spot at one of the beach bars on the sand for sundowners and cocktails as the light softens over the Aegean.
Evening
Dinner at a taverna along the beach road, then a relaxed drink where you are — Perissa’s nights run gently, on the sand rather than in clubs.
Day 2

Around the island

Fira, the caldera and Oia’s sunset — the classic Santorini day out.

Morning
Take the bus (via Fira) or drive to Fira, the caldera-edge capital. Wander the cliff-top lanes for the view straight down into the volcanic bay, and ride the cable car down to the old port if you fancy.
Midday
Board a caldera boat cruise out to Nea Kameni, the active volcanic islet, for the walk up to its crater, then a swim by the warm sulphur springs off Palea Kameni. Many cruises finish with an Oia sunset.
Afternoon
If you’d rather stay on land, tour a Santorini winery around Pyrgos or Megalochori for a tasting of Assyrtiko and sweet Vinsanto, with vineyards and caldera views.
Sunset
End in Oia at the north tip of the island — whitewashed lanes, blue domes and the most famous sunset in Greece. Arrive early to find a spot, then a final dinner before the bus back — see where to eat and after dark.
Base

Where to stay

Base yourself right on the beach in Perissa or Perivolos — the whole of Day 1 is then a flat walk from your door, and the bus to Fira for Day 2 leaves from the village. Compare the areas in our neighborhoods guide, then pick a room from the hotels guide.

+ Day 3

With more time

A third day opens up the rest of Santorini. Explore Akrotiri, the Minoan Bronze-Age town buried by the eruption and often called the Greek Pompeii, and the nearby Red Beach; spend a slow afternoon in the island’s wine country around Pyrgos; or simply cross Mesa Vouno to Kamari, the other black-sand resort, for a change of beach. See all the options in the day-trips guide.

Good to know

Is two days enough for Perissa?

Two days is plenty to enjoy the black-sand beach and beach bars, walk south to Perivolos, and get up Mesa Vouno to the ruins of Ancient Thera — then spend a day seeing the rest of Santorini. Add a third day for a caldera boat cruise, Akrotiri, or the wineries.

Do you need a car?

Not for Perissa itself — the beach strip is flat and walkable, and KTEL buses connect the village to Fira, the hub for the whole island. For the day-two loop around Santorini, an ATV/quad or rental car makes Oia, the wineries and Akrotiri much easier; otherwise plan around the bus timetable via Fira.

What's the best way to reach Ancient Thera?

The Greco-Roman ruins sit on top of Mesa Vouno, directly above Perissa. You can hike up the switchback path from the south end of the beach (steep, best done early before the heat) or drive/taxi up the road from the Kamari side. Bring water, sun protection and proper shoes.
